Hulu Moves ‘Love, Victor’ and ‘Taste the Nation’ Premiere Dates Due to Juneteenth

Hulu is moving the premiere dates of two new shows, Love, Victor and Taste the Nation, away from June 19th (Juneteenth), out of respect for the holiday commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African-Americans in the Confederacy.

Love, Victor will now premiere two days earlier on June 17th, with Taste the Nation following on June 18th.

“This date represents an important turning point for our nation and for human rights, and we believe that now, more than ever, it deserves to have its own day in the spotlight,” Hulu said in a statement.

The decision comes in light of ongoing protests against institutional racism in the United States. Juneteenth marks the date — June 19th, 1865 — when the Emancipation Proclamation was read to the final enslaved African-Americans in Texas, two years after it was signed into order by President Abraham Lincoln. Although slavery was not officially abolished in the U.S. until the ratification of the 13th Amendment, Juneteenth is observed annually as Freedom Day for black Americans.

Love, Victor, a spinoff of the film Love, Simon, is a young adult dramedy following the misadventures of a high school student coming to terms with his sexuality. Taste the Nation is a documentary series hosted by Padma Lakshmi that explores the cuisines of America’s immigrant communities.
