Legendary Mexican Journalist Jorge Ramos Will Leave Univision After 40 Years

Ramos didn’t reveal his plans, but said that “there is so much to do in journalism, and that really makes me excited”

Legendary Mexican journalist and anchor Jorge Ramos, who led news coverage at Univision for 40 years, will leave the network at the end of the year. Ramos announced his departure during Monday’s Noticiero Univision broadcast, revealing that he would not be renewing his contract with the company.

“I have something personal to share. I’m leaving Univision. The company and I decided to not renew our contract which expires at the end of the year,” he said in Spanish. “I’ll be with this newscast until December. It has been a hard, sad decision that took a lot of time to make. This is how 40 years end with Univision, 38 of which were with Noticiero. Seventeen of which I anchored Al Punto.”

Ramos has co-anchored Noticiero Univision since 1986 and has hosted a weekend magazine show called Al Punto. He, for decades, has been one of the leading voices in Spanish-language media, earning 10 Emmy Awards throughout his career. He was infamously kicked out of a news conference by Donald Trump in 2015 after Ramos pressed him on immigration policy.

“I am so thankful for these four decades. This was literally my second home,” Ramos said in Monday’s telecast. “I am so proud of being part of this great team of journalists over the years. They’re my friends, my family, and I wish them the best.”

Ramos ended by sharing that he’d later reveal his future plans, adding that “there’s so much to do in journalism, and that makes me really excited.”

“For now, I’m just going to thank you all who see us each night and who’ve been with me for so long,” he said. “This is not an immediate goodbye. I’ll be here tomorrow with the news.”

In a statement, Noticias Univision president Daniel Coronell thanked Ramos for his years at the company, saying that the team was “well-prepared to continue the tradition of journalistic excellence” the brand has built over the decades. Ramos’ exit comes about a year after fellow Mexican journalist León Krauze left the network after disagreeing with TelevisaUnivision’s coverage of an interview with Trump, conducted by the network’s Enrique Acevedo.
