Marc Maron and Lynn Shelton

Lynn Shelton died on Friday, May 15, in Los Angeles at the age of 54. The news was announced by her romantic and creative partner, Marc Maron in a statement to Indie Wire. Maron indicated that her death was not due to COVID-19 but a previously unknown blood disorder.

Shelton was an acclaimed director known for her independent films like HumpdayYour Sister’s Sister and My Effortless Brilliance. She also directed episodes of major TV shows like “Mad Men,” “GLOW” and most recently, four episodes of “Little Fires Everywhere.” Maron and Shelton were more than romantic partners, however, as they also collaborated in film and television.

Here’s what you need to know about Lynn Shelton’s partner, Marc Maron:

1. He Posted a Heartbreaking Tribute to Shelton, Saying They Were ‘Starting a Life Together’

In a touching statement reported by Indie Wire, Maron spoke about his partner’s death: “I have some awful news. Lynn passed away last night. She collapsed yesterday morning after having been ill for a week. There was a previously unknown, underlying condition. It was not COVID-19. The doctors could not save her. They tried. Hard.”

It continues:

I loved her very much as I know many of you did as well. It’s devastating. I am leveled, heartbroken and in complete shock and don’t really know how to move forward in this moment. I needed you all to know. I don’t know some of you. Some I do. I’m just trying to let the people who were important to her know. She was a beautiful, kind, loving, charismatic artist. Her spirit was pure joy. She made me happy. I made her happy. We were happy. I made her laugh all the time. We laughed a lot. We were starting a life together. I really can’t believe what is happening. This is a horrendous, sad loss.

2. Maron & Shelton Had Worked Together in the Past & Were Collaborating at the Time of Her Death

Maron and Shelton were collaborating on a script for a film at the time of her death, and the two were also involved romantically. The two were involved since at least last year when they worked together on the movie Sword of Trust. Maron appeared on the show “GLOW,” which Shelton directed on five different occasions.

Shelton shared a lot of photos on Instagram of her and Maron collaborating, including back in 2018 when they worked together on Sword of Trust. The two appear to have known each other for years before their relationship began, with Shelton appearing on Maron’s podcast back in 2015.

3. The Two Were in a Relationship in the Last Year of Her Life, After Shelton’s Divorce From Kevin Seal

Before she began dating Maron, Shelton was married to Kevin Seal from 2011 until their divorce in 2019, and the two had a son together, Milo Seal. Kevin Seal is an actor, musician and TV host, perhaps best known for being an MTV VJ in the late 1980s. In an interview on Maron’s podcast in 2015, Shelton spoke about living in Seattle with her husband. She said that after he left MTV, Seal worked as a voice actor in New York before they moved to Seattle.

According to Shelton, he then attended design school and took up professional woodworking before ultimately becoming a stay-at-home dad to their son. “When he was looking around for a new job, we realized that the most important job he could be doing is taking care of our kid, who’s deaf [among other needs],” Shelton explained to Maron. “It turns out, he’s a much better full-time parent than I am, and it suits him. [He and our son] are like best friends.”

Maron was married twice, to Kimberly Reiss from 1997 to 2001 and Mishna Wolff from 2004 to 2007, and he has spoken frequently about his relationships during his stand-up acts. He was also engaged to Jessica Sanchez but announced that they had broken off the engagement in 2013. Before beginning his relationship with Shelton, Maron dated Sarah Cain, a visual artist, for many years, breaking it off in early 2019.

In a recent interview published in March 2020, Maron spoke about his relationship with Shelton: “We’ve been seeing each other, I guess it’s been about a year. Because we were both in other relationships fairly recently before we started seeing each other, we kept it on the down low for, I’d say, seven months or eight months. Now, we’re letting it seep into the culture, for those who give a sh*t.”
