‘Pretty Little Liars’ Reboot From ‘Riverdale’ Creator in Early Development

A reboot of the Freeform series “Pretty Little Liars” is in the early stages of development at Warner Bros. TelevisionVariety has confirmed.

Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, who previously developed “Riverdale” for television, is developing the potential reboot under his overall deal with WBTV. Alloy Entertainment’s Leslie Morgenstein and Gina Girolamo will serve as executive producers on the project, as Alloy controls the rights to the series. All other details, including the plot, are being kept under wraps.

At this time, it is unknown if series creator I. Marlene King would be involved in any new iteration of the series. King departed her overall deal at WBTV last year for a new deal at 20th Television.

The project has not yet been taken out to market, but a natural destination would be HBO Max, which is also owned by WBTV’s parent company, WarnerMedia. According to sources, the streaming service is looking to build out its offerings of YA content. To that end, HBO Max is currently prepping a sequel series to the classic teen drama “Gossip Girl.”

“Pretty Little Liars” ended its original run in 2017 after seven seasons and over 150 episodes. The teen thriller, which was based on Sara Shepard’s books of the same name, revolves around the titular Liars, who are being tormented by a mysterious villain known as “A.”

The show inspired two spinoffs, “Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists” and “Ravenswood.” Both were canceled after one season.

In addition to his work on “Riverdale,” Aguirre-Sacasa’s other credits include “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina,” “Katy Keene,” “Supergirl,” and “Glee.” He is also currently working on the supernatural drama “The Shelley Society” for HBO Max.

He is repped by Sloane Offer.

The Hollywood Reporter first broke news of the reboot.
