What to Stream on Each Service During Black History Month

Black excellence in filmmaking should be celebrated every month — but Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, HBO Max and Disney Plus have created special sections curating their offerings and highlighting Black History Month.

Given we’ve been without live music for nearly a year, it would be a good time to watch Beyonce’s Coachella concert-movie “Homecoming.” Sure, it won’t beat dancing in the desert to Queen Bey’s biggest hits, but getting a fly-on-the-wall look at the performance is the next best thing. If you’re looking for a bit more story, opt for Lion King allegory “Black is King.”

For drama lovers, take an emotional journey without even leaving your couch, Barry Jenkins has you covered with “Moonlight” and “If Beale Street Could Talk” or watch “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” which features Chadwick Boseman’s electric final performance. For a more traditional happily ever after tale, get ready for the streaming debut of the beloved 1997 “Cinderella” with Brandy and Whitney Houston.“

One Night in Miami,” “The United States vs. Billie Holiday” and “Judas and the Black Messiah” are all critically-acclaimed new releases that give audiences a more nuanced understanding of American icons Sam Cooke, Malcolm X, Jim Brown, Cassius Clay (Muhammad Ali), Billie Holiday and Chairman Fred Hampton. Through their fictional portrayals, the actors create more honest (albeit complicated) depictions of history’s biggest figures.
