Living inside us all are trillions of symbiotic microorganisms – bacteria, fungi, protozoa and viruses, collectively known as our microbiome. Every bit as vital as our heart, lungs, or even brain, a healthy and diverse collection of microbes can help protect against some of the biggest health threats around, including obesity, diabetes, heart disease, irritable bowel disease, arthritis and, even, depression and mental health. A healthy diet is one of the best ways to boost the microbiome and improve our own wellbeing. Science with Sam explains.
