How Quickly is India’s Gaming Industry Growing?

For many years, China has been the most populous country in the world. Just recently, however, the population of India has been confirmed to be bigger, with both countries home to approximately 1.4 billion people.

It should come as no surprise that India has a large gaming industry. But how quickly is it growing? Will it continue to grow with the rise in population, or is it expected to stall?

⚡ India’s Gaming Industry Today

By the end of 2022, India’s gaming industry was worth approximately 226 billion rupees (£2.24 billion). The number of active gamers who play video games regularly was around 507 million. Of these, some 120 million spend money on gaming, while the remaining play free games.

Over a third of Indians regularly play video games. Fewer than a tenth spend money on their gaming activities. Of those who spend money on games, roughly 1,860 rupees (£18.50) is the average amount spent in 2022. This is an average, so there’ll be some people who spend much more than this on gaming and others who only spend small amounts.

People don’t just spend money on regular video games; they also place real-money bets on their favourite e-sports team and play casino games. According to data, India is expected to increase by 8.45% (2022-2026), culminating in a market volume of US$46.70 million in casino games alone in 2026.

Some people find these types of games more appealing than playing video games because you can win real money. They’re also quick to learn, and some, like blackjack, require strategy and decision-making that others find challenging but rewarding. There are lots of websites for online blackjack in India that let you play for real money. Here you can enjoy a thrilling gaming experience, with welcome packages of up to ₹126,000 and 150 free spins, attracting players from India and all over the world.

⚡ Predictions for the Growth of India’s Gaming Industry

There are many predictions about how much the gaming industry will grow over the next few years. For example, one estimates that it will be worth as much as 69.6 billion rupees (£691 million) by the end of 2027. If this turns out to be true, India’s gaming industry will have more than tripled in size in just five years.

The 2022 figure for annual spending on gaming – 1,860 rupees (£18.50) – was 11% greater than the previous year. The number of gamers had also experienced year-on-year growth: the 2022 figure of 507 million was 12% higher than the 2021 equivalent, which was 420 million.

Studies have also shown increases in game downloads and the time people spend playing video games. All these facts and figures show that gaming is a fast-growing industry in India. While many international games are very popular, there are lots of Indian creations that are big hits with players. The Indian company Gametion is a prime example. It’s developed seven mobile games that have been downloaded more than 800 million times since September 2022.

⚡ Where Does Gaming Go From Here?

The future of gaming is very exciting, not just in India, but worldwide. For starters, many software trends will greatly impact the industry. These could affect everything from the development of games to their content and how people play them.

There are many Indian video game developers. Between them, they’ve released well over 17,000 games just for mobiles alone; there are loads more Indian games for regular home consoles too. As well as Gametion, there’s Moonton, Nazara Technologies, GameShastra and Lifelike Studios, to give a few examples. While these companies have already produced lots of top-quality titles, there’s no doubt that they’ll continue upping their game. While established companies will try to release more ambitious and engaging games, we’ll undoubtedly see many new video game companies emerge too.

India is experiencing a gaming boom. The future of this industry looks very promising indeed. Gamers have lots of exciting new games and experiences to look forward to.
