BTS Embraces Disco On Their First All-English Single ‘Dynamite’

2020 has already been the biggest year yet for BTS, who have established themselves as one of the most prolific and successful artists when it comes to charting major albums in the U.S. Now, with their latest single release, the band makes it clear that they are on the hunt not just for another track that will debut high on the Hot 100 and quickly work its way down the ranking, but a true, bonafide smash.

With “Dynamite,” it looks like they’ve produced exactly that.

The single sounds like it was crafted specifically to be a chart-topper, and it may very well soon become one. In fact, “Dynamite” doesn’t just feel like a big win, it immediately comes off as a strong contender for the Song of the Summer crown…even if the timing of its release makes it a bit difficult for it to actually claim that prize.

“Dynamite” leans into the upbeat, positive vibes previously heard on seasonal smashes like Justin Timberlake’s “Can’t Stop the Feeling” and Katy Perry’s “California Gurls,” which were both inescapable in summers past. BTS’s latest is a disco-lite delight, and while the lyrics can be hard to understand sometimes (those high notes are high), it doesn’t really matter—it’s that fun.

Between the guitar hooks and the non-stop trumpets, the track was obviously produced by someone (Dave Stewart) who knows how pop music works, and the family-friendly lyrics make “Dynamite” the kind of single everybody from young kids to moms in minivans can enjoy.

Some may try to pretend they’re too cool for a composition so clearly rated PG, but BTS’s new cut will soon take over the planet, winning nearly everyone over after just one play.

“Dynamite” appears to be the first single taken from BTS’s forthcoming album, though the set doesn’t have a release date or a title…although the group’s management company Big Hit Entertainment did reveal that a new full-length should arrive by the end of the year.

Fans have been gearing up for the release of “Dynamite” for weeks ever since BTS revealed the track was coming toward the end of August. The cut has become a trending topic many times over (before it was even released), and there will surely be an organized and concerted effort on the part of ARMYs (the name fans have collectively adopted) to not only make this latest release the biggest yet for the group, but perhaps their first No. 1.

Earlier this year, BTS hit a new peak position on the Hot 100 with “On,” the lead single from their album Map of the Soul: 7. The tune debuted and peaked at No. 4, becoming their highest-charting cut yet. It was a very big moment when that title arrived, but now fans are hoping to make this latest era even bigger, and with a song that sounds as massive as “Dynamite,” it’s entirely possible, and perhaps even likely, that they will succeed.
