Drake Is Just The Fifth Musician To Spend 50 Weeks At No. 1 On The Hot 100

Just over one week after unleashing his new single “Toosie Slide” onto the world, Drake has found himself back at No. 1 on the Hot 100. The tune, perhaps the first promotional cut from his next album (which is apparently in the works), opens atop the list, becoming the rapper’s seventh leader on the all-genre tally.

A new No. 1 hit is always reason to celebrate for any artist, but this latest win is special right from the get-go, as it adds not just to Drake’s list of rulers, but to his career count of weeks spent on the Hot 100’s throne. Now the Canadian artist ranks among the top five when it comes to the most time ruling the roost.

With one more turn at the top to his name, Drake has now lived at No. 1 on the Hot 100 for an incredible 50 weeks, and that sum is sure to go up, either with “Toosie Slide” or his next leader (and there is sure to be another in the future). At the moment, the hip-hop giant is tied for the fourth-most weeks at No. 1 with R&B vocal group Boyz II Men, according to Billboard.

In first place among all acts when it comes to the most weeks spent at No. 1 on the most important singles ranking in the U.S. is Mariah Carey, who faces no real competition at the moment. The singer has earned 82 stays in the penthouse with her 19 chart-toppers, and should her annual favorite “All I Want for Christmas Is You” return to the summit at the end of 2020 (which is a possibility), that figure could increase once again in only a few months.

In a fairly distant second place is Rihanna, who is the only other artist to lay claim to the No. 1 spot for at least 60 weeks (her current total). Just behind her by only one frame in charge of the list are The Beatles, who continue to hold the record for the most chart-topping singles (20), though they’re in third when it comes to the most frames spent at No. 1, with 59.

Drake’s longest-running No. 1 hit yet is “God’s Plan,” which ruled for 11 nonconsecutive weeks in 2018. Later that year, “In My Feelings” tacked 10 more stays in the penthouse onto his total, and in 2016, his first chart-topper as a lead act, “One Dance” with Wizkid and Kyla, owned the tally for 10 weeks. His 2016 collaboration with Rihanna “Work” controlled the list for nine turns, and his own “Nice For What” ran the show for eight periods in 2018. Drake’s first trip to the top, Rihanna’s 2010 champion “What’s My Name?,” only managed one frame at No. 1, as has “Toosie Slide,” at least so far.
