Early Odds For UFC’s May 9 Fight Card

UFC president Dana White is shooting for a return to live fight action on May 9. If White gets his wish that fight card will feature three title fights.

White spoke to ESPN about the event. While White did not provide a location, he did say he is deep in the process of assembling the fight card. According to White, the targeted line up, includes many fights that were on the four fight cards that were postponed due to the global coronavirus pandemic.

In the headliner, Tony Ferguson and Justin Gaethje would battle for the interim lightweight belt. Henry Cejudo would put his bantamweight crown on the line against former two-time 135-pound UFC champ Dominick Cruz and two-division women’s champ, Amanda Nunes, would meet Felicia Spencer in defense of her women’s featherwieght title. 

The champions are all favored in those matchups.

Sources told MMA Fighting, who first reported the May 9 date, that the possibility exists that the fight card could take place in California, Texas or Florida.

After the news of the potential event broke, White told Variety that the UFC Apex could be considered for events in May.

“We built the APEX facility next door just in time to save the day from this pandemic,” White told Variety via email. “Live fights will be produced out of there starting next month and for the foreseeable future.”

The Apex is on the UFC campus in Las Vegas and has been used to host the Dana White Contender Series cards.

MMA Fighting reached out to the Nevada State Athletic Commission regarding White’s comments on fights taking place at the Apex in May. NSAC Executive Director Bob Bennett responded via email, writing, “We are closed until further notice, and once again the data from the science will determine future events accordingly.”
