Four Indicted For Allegedly Burning Down Minneapolis Police Station During George Floyd Unrest

A federal grand jury on Tuesday indicted four men for allegedly setting fire to the Minneapolis Police Department’s Third Precinct during protests in the wake of George Floyd’s death, U.S. Attorney Erica MacDonald said.

KEY FACTS

Dylan Shakespeare Robinson, 22; Davon De-Andre Turner, 24; Bryce Michael Williams, 26; and Branden Michael Wolfe, 23, were each indicted on one federal count of  conspiracy to commit arson.

The complaint alleges that a crowd of hundreds began yelling, “burn it down, burn it down” outside the Third Precinct on May 28, and soon after the men entered the police station when a fence was torn down, according to a news release.

The indictment says that Robinson lit an incendiary device held by an unidentified co-conspirator and threw it toward the building, while Turner and Williams lit a Molotov cocktail brought into the precinct by Turner, and Wolfe pushed a barrel into a fire at the entrance of the building to accelerate the blaze.

In a statement, the FBI said their arrest “serves as a warning” to those who are “hijacking peaceful protests.”

In the meantime, Minneapolis plans to spend $4.8 million over the next three years to temporarily rent an office building to serve as a replacement for the Third Precinct.

Key background

Dozens of other protesters have been arrested on federal charges related to protests and riots after Floyd’s death. At least 51 people across 18 states were charged by the Justice Department in mid-June, while another 22 face federal charges stemming from clashes with federal agents in Portland last month. President Donald Trump and Attorney General Bill Barr have often called for harsh consequences for protesters damaging damage or confronting police officers, blaming Antifa and calling on law enforcement to quell unrest.
