In Photos: Europe Starts To Resume Public Life As Coronavirus Wanes

Life in Europe may still be a far cry from the way it was before the coronavirus took hold, but residents are beginning to return to public life as countries allow some businesses and institutions to reopen.

KEY FACTS

In Italy, where the number of new cases and deaths is falling after peaking in mid-March, bookshops, children’s clothing stores and dry cleaners have been deemed essential businesses, allowing customers to peruse stores as long as they wear masks.

Last week, Denmark made headlines for taking the bold step of reopening elementary schools.

The Czech Republic has allowed businesses such as bike shops and hardware stores to reopen, and will gradually allow restaurants and larger stores to reopen by June 8, barring a resurgence in COVID-19 cases.

Streets in Vienna were abuzz this weekend with shoppers as retailers smaller than 4,300 square feet (400 sq. meters) were allowed to reopen in Austria, which has reported fewer than 15,000 cases.

Although shops and restaurants remain closed in Spain, construction and manufacturing employees were allowed to return to work this week.

What to watch for

Europe’s largest nations are taking more time to ease restrictions. Germany will begin to reopen schools on May 4, with priority given to students in their final year. France will also allow the reopening of schools starting on May 11, but has banned large gatherings through July 11, resulting in the postponement of the Tour de France. The United Kingdom will remain under lockdown until early May, but Boris Johnson’s administration is reportedly drafting a plan to allow children to return to school starting May 11.
