It Only Took One Song For Blackpink To Make History On The On-Demand Streaming Chart

South Korean musicians, both solo acts and groups of all kinds, have shown that their fan bases are more than willing to open their wallets when they have a new album or song out, and it seems like every week or so, another name from the nation is making history on one of Billboard’s sales-only charts. It is on the streaming-only lists where acts from Asia continue to perform better, and there are only a few very successful stars who have managed to land on one of the streaming-focused lists.

Last frame, Blackpink broke barriers by placing “Sour Candy,” their collaboration with Lady Gaga, on the On-Demand Streaming Songs chart, which has proved to be notoriously difficult for musical acts from South Korea to reach. By scoring even one placement, they made history in all of the following ways.

First South Korean Girl Group To Chart

Only a very small number of South Korean artists, either in groups or working on their own, have reached Billboard’s On-Demand Streaming Songs chart, and before “Sour Candy” arrived on the list, none of them were girl groups. Thanks to the hit’s ability to rack up millions of plays in just one seven-day period, Blackpink is the only all-female band from the Asian nation to make it to the ranking.

Second South Korean Act To Chart

Before “Sour Candy” made its historic debut on the On-Demand Streaming Songs chart, only one other South Korean musical act had appeared on the list, and it’s one that everyone who follows the K-pop space is familiar with. BTS has now collected five placements on the tally, and aside from Blackpink, no other name from the territory had reached the roster.

Third-Highest-Charting Song By A South Korean Act

While “Sour Candy” only managed a single turn on the On-Demand Streaming Songs chart before falling off the list (it’s no longer present on the tally), it did manage to rise high enough to become the third-highest-charting track by musicians from South Korea. The Lady Gaga/Blackpink collaboration climbed to No. 18, which makes it just the third tune to lift into the top 20 on the ranking.

Fifth Top 40 Hit By A South Korean Act

As it appears now, the On-Demand Streaming Songs chart only features 25 spots, so every track that makes its way to the list is automatically a top 40 hit, but that’s not always how it was. The tally used to be longer, and just one tune by a South Korean musical group made its way to the list without actually breaking into the top 40 region. “Sour Candy” is just the fifth release by a soloist or band from the country to become a proper hit on the ranking.
