Kim Kardashian West Says O.J. Simpson Murder Trial ‘Tore My Family Apart’ In Rare Admission

Topline

Kim Kardashian West became a household name after the premiere of her family’s reality show Keeping Up With The Kardashians in 2007, but it was during football player and close family friend O.J. Simpson’s murder trial in the mid-nineties that her family had their first brush with fame, an experience she said on David Letterman’s Netflix show “tore my family apart.”

Key Facts

The third season of David Letterman’s Netflix show My Next Guest Needs No Introduction kicked off Wednesday with the comedian interviewing Kardashian West, opening with questions about the Simpson trial for the murder of Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman, which was dubbed by media as “the trial of the century.”

Kardashian West’s father, Robert Kardashian, was Simpson’s friend from college and part of the football player’s legal defense team, while her mother, Kris Jenner, was Nicole’s best friend and believed Simpson was guilty of the grisly murder.

Before the killing, Kardashian West grew up calling Simpson “Uncle O.J.,” she told Letterman, and was on a joint family vacation in Mexico with the Simpsons just weeks before Nicole was murdered.

The trial “tore my family apart,” Kardashian West told Letterman, saying she and her sister Kourtney, who were teenagers at the time, didn’t know which of their divorced parents they should side with.

Kardashian West said it was difficult “having your dad take one side and your mom take the complete opposite side,” adding none of the kids wanted to hurt their parents’ feelings.

But even 25 years after Simpson’s controversial acquittal, Kardashian West still refrained from sharing if she thought Simpson was truly innocent, telling Letterman, “I’ve never expressed how I’ve felt about that because I just respect his children.”

Key Background

Nicole and Goldman were found murdered at her home in Los Angeles in 1994. Simpson was acquitted of the grisly double murder, but was found to be liable for the deaths two years later in a civil case brought by Nicole and Goldman’s families. The slayings and ensuing media circus surrounding the trial, which saw a Black star football player accused of murdering his white ex-wife, “divided the nation by race and sex, and raised troubling questions about the power of celebrity and the nature of justice,” the New York Times wrote at the time.

Surprising Fact

Kendall Jenner, Kardashian West’s younger half-sister and one of the highest-paid supermodels in the world according to a Forbes estimate, was given the middle name “Nicole” by her mother in honor of her late friend, who died less than two years before Kendall was born. “I’m honored to have this name,” Kendall told her Snapchat followers in 2016.
