‘Lord Of The Rings’ Star Ian Holm Dies At 88

British actor Sir Ian Holm—best known for key roles in Lord of the Rings, Chariots of Fire and Alien—has died at the age of 88 after a long battle with Parkinson’s.

The actor died “peacefully” in a London hospital from a Parikson’s-related illness, according to a Friday statement from his agent. 

During his long and successful career, Holm proved his versatility in film, theater and TV, telling the Los Angeles Times in 2000 “I’m never the same twice.”

Over the course of 13 years, Holm portrayed the hobbit Bilbo Baggins in all four of Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings films.

Holm is also known for playing Ash in the 1979 science-fiction horror film Alien.

Other roles, like coach Sam Mussabini in 1981’s Chariots of Fire earned him critical acclaim, including an Oscar nomination for best supporting actor, a BAFTA Film Award for best-supporting artists and a Cannes Film Festival award.

Sir Ian Holm was born Ian Holm Cuthbert on September 12, 1931, in Goodmayes, England. After studying at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, the young actor spent many years at the Royal Shakespeare Company before making his foray into television in the 1960s. Over the next few decades, Holm appeared in over a dozen films on the big screen, including Mary Queen of Scots (1971), Hamlet (1990), The Aviator (2004) and Ratatouille (2007). Holm was knighted for his achievements in 1989.
