Man Shot By Secret Service Outside White House Charged With Assaulting An Officer

The man was identified as Myron Berryman by police on Tuesday, and is reportedly in stable condition after being shot twice in the torso, according to USA Today citing an anonymous law enforcement source.

Police said he has been charged with assaulting an officer. 

According to a Secret Service statement, Berryman told an on-duty Secret Service officer roughly a block away from the White House Monday evening that he was carrying a weapon and Associated Press reported that anonymous officials said he had been heard yelling about killing people. 

Berryman then “ran aggressively towards the officer” before making a motion that he had pulled something out of his clothing, according to a Secret Service statement, before he “crouched into a shooter’s stance as if about to fire a weapon,” at which point the officer discharged his weapon toward Berryman.

However, AP reported that Berryman may have been unarmed, and that no weapon was found at the scene, according to unnamed officials.

Authorities are still investigating the case, including whether there was a motive and if mental illness may have played a role.
