Meghan Markle Reveals She Had A Miscarriage In Moving New York Times Op-Ed

Topline

Meghan Markle, in a reflective New York Times op-ed measuring the impact of the pandemic on millions of people, the deaths of Black at the hands of police and a divisive U.S. election, revealed she suffered a miscarriage this year in a piece titled “The Losses We Share”.

Key Facts

The Duchess of Sussex wrote in the op-ed published Wednesday that on a morning in July this year, as she embarked on her daily routine and tended to her son, one-year-old Archie, she “felt a sharp cramp”.

“I knew, as I clutched my firstborn child, that I was losing my second,” the former actress wrote, before describing the “unbearable grief” that her and her husband, Prince Harry, experienced.

“Despite the staggering commonality of this pain, the conversation remains taboo, riddled with (unwarranted) shame, and perpetuating a cycle of solitary mourning,” Markle, 39, wrote, as she reflected on one of her most candid interviews she gave as a senior royal during her and Harry’s 2019 tour of South Africa that revealed some of the challenges the couple had faced under the spotlight.

In a call to action to look out for one another over the holidays, Markle used that interview’s central question—”Are you OK?”— as a means to reflect on her experience of miscarriage and the “loss and pain” that has “plagued every one of us in 2020”.

Outlining some of the defining moments of the year—the deaths of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd, the deaths of nearly 260,000 Americans from Covid, and a fraught election cycle—she ended on a hopeful message of healing ahead of Thanksgiving that “we will be” ok.

Crucial Quote

Markle wrote: “Losing a child means carrying an almost unbearable grief, experienced by many but talked about by few. In the pain of our loss, my husband and I discovered that in a room of 100 women, 10 to 20 of them will have suffered from miscarriage.”

Tangent

The Sussexes moved to Canada and then the U.S. earlier this year, eventually settling in California after stepping down as senior members of the British Royal Family in March following months of “internal discussion”. The couple have since made appearances for charity and commemoration events, privately and publicly, while Markle, who is an American citizen, spoke out about this year’s presidential election in the runup to the poll. She also encouraged people to register to vote and has spoken out about the impact of Black Lives Matter protests, while she is said to have been the first royal to vote in a U.S. election.
