New ‘Star Wars: Maverick’ Game Could Be Revealed Next Week

It looks like a big Star Wars video game announcement could land next week as part of the busy summer games schedule starting in June.

That includes a big PS5 event and plenty of other goodies.

The evidence for the reveal of Star Wars: Maverick from Motive studios isn’t bulletproof by any means, but the hints and teases and clues are all there for anyone to see.

It all begins with this tweet from EA Motive Montreal, which Bloomberg games reporter Jason Schreier retweets, stating “Looks like someone’s getting ready to announce a new game”.

Schreier later notes that this is specifically a Star Wars game. In an article at Kotaku about some of EA’s cancelled Star Wars projects he briefly mentions that there are two Star Wars games currently in development at EA. Respawn’s sequel to Jedi Fallen Order and “a smaller, more unusual project at EA Motive in Montreal, Canada.”

This, it appears, could be Star Wars: Maverick.

GamesBeat editor Jeff Grubb will be breaking the story next week, it appears. Grubb responded to Motive’s tweet with a gif of Maverick (Tom Cruise) from Top Gun.

If that’s not a teaser I don’t know what is.

The clues keep coming. Grubb also tweeted a schedule of upcoming gaming events, like the big PS5 event (which has moved to the 4th) and “Mel Gibson picture” is listed on June 2nd.

What does a Mel Gibson picture have to do with this? Well, Mel Gibson starred in the Richard Donner western, Maverick, alongside Jodie Foster and

It’s a good movie, you should watch it sometime.

It’s also just another clue that the new game will either be called Star Wars: Maverick or that’s a code-name for the title. I suspect it’s the actual name, and we’ll get a big reveal article at GamesBeat next week and probably some gameplay then or during the PS5 event later in the week (though this will certainly be a cross-platform title).

Let’s just hope it actually gets released and isn’t just another exciting Star Wars game that never sees the light of day. EA has cancelled games left and right, to the point you’d almost suspect they’re working for the Empire. A lot of very promising games have been axed since EA took over the IP, though plenty were cancelled before as well. I’m still bitter about Star Wars 1313 never seeing the light of day. Thanks for nothing, Disney.

At least we got Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order last year, proving that there’s a big, hungry audience for Star Wars games that are A) not mobile and B) not Battlefront. Keep your fingers crossed, young padawans. May the Force be with EA Motive.

And may the Force of others be with you.
