Packers: Scouting Report On Sixth Round Draft Pick Jon Runyan

JON RUNYAN, OG, MICHIGAN

THE SKINNY

Runyan’s father, Jon, had a 14-year NFL career and was Pro Bowl right tackle.

The younger Runyan redshirted in 2015 and was a back-up his first two seasons. Runyan moved into the starting lineup the last two years and was a first-team all-Big Ten Conference player each season.

Despite playing left tackle at Michigan, Runyan lacks technique and functional strength and projects to guard at the next level.

SCOUTING REPORT

Runyan has an extremely high football I.Q., is strong and moves well. He’s quick to process information and is has the necessary athleticism to play inside.

Runyan’s hands are extremely inconsistent, though, and defenders get to his pads too easily. His body control is also poor and his technique must be improved.

PACKERS’ PREDICAMENT

Green Bay, which had one of the top offensive lines in football in 2019, needed help.

The Packers let elite right tackle Bryan Bulaga leave in free agency, and signed former Lion Rick Wagner to replace him. That’s risky business, considering Pro Football Focus ranked Wagner just 62nd overall among offensive tackles last season and Detroit released him on March 13.

In addition, left tackle David Bakhtiari and center Corey Linsley will become free agents in March, 2021, and the Packers will be hard-pressed to pay both.

Runyan now gives Green Bay additional flexibility and depth on its line.

THEY SAID IT

Runyan Jr. on playing in his father’s immense shadow: “Growing up, it was kinda hard, especially trying to play football in the Philadelphia area. People were always giving me these unfair comparisons against my dad, when I was just a 14-year-old kid just trying to find my way.

“I didn’t even know what position I was good at yet. It was really difficult, and I still get those comparisons to him. I feel like sometimes they’re unfair. I’m still [coming] into my own. I’ve been living kind of in the shadow, but I’m trying to step outside that shadow and cast a bigger one over that one.”

Runyan on his best position: “There’s actually a lot of different opinions. I kind of see myself projecting more inside at the next level, but I think I will always have the capability of kicking it outside to tackle just based off my athletic ability. I even did kind of play center my first year at Michigan, so I still have that.

“I’ve kind of been pitching my versatility as an offensive lineman. Teams kind of tell me not to push off the tackle idea, and that’s something I’m fine with. I mean, I don’t care. This is my whole career. I just want to get on the field.”
