Peloton Plans A Cheaper Version Of Its $2,000 Bike

TOPLINE

Peloton CEO John Foley said the fitness giant is looking to release a less-expensive exercise bike after sales jumped over the past few months amid a boom in at-home exercise with people confined to their homes due to the coronavirus pandemic.

KEY FACTS

Foley told Time that Peloton aims to become more accessible over the next several years by making their products more affordable.

Peloton bikes cost just over $2,000, or $58 a month for a little more than three years as part of an interest-free payment plan the company offers.

Despite these steep prices, Peloton sales jumped 66% in the third quarter, driven by Covid-19 stay-at-home orders and mandatory gym closings.

Foley said he’s keen on offering a lower price, saying, “If we can get those monthly payments down, we can really open [Peloton] up.”

He hinted at the release of a new bike model within the next few years, and said he wants “everyone in every socioeconomic class” to be able to afford a Peloton.

“Let’s say that a year or two from now, we might have two products in the fitness category.” Foley told Time.

CRUCIAL QUOTE

“If you can get to [$20] a month per person, you’re starting to get below Planet Fitness-style, low-end gym chain affordability. We think that that’s a pretty big opportunity for Peloton,” Foley told TIME.
