Pence Tells Harris To ‘Stop Playing Politics With People’s Lives,’ Distorting Harris’ Remarks On Vaccines

Topline

After Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) stated she’d take a vaccine if the medical community approved of it—not President Trump—Vice President Pence distorted her comments, accusing the California senator of “playing politics with peoples’ lives” and floating anti-vaccine conspiracy theories during the debate Wednesday.

Key Facts

“If Dr. Fauci, if the doctors tell us we should take it, I’ll be the first in line to take it,” Harris said of a vaccine, “But if Donald Trump tells us that we should take it, I’m not taking it.”

Pence responded by accusing the senator of “undermin[ing] public confidence in a vaccine,” calling it “unconscionable.”

But the vice president had twisted Harris’ remarks—Harris said she would not take a vaccine if only Trump had promoted it, and not doctors such as Dr. Fauci.

Crucial Quote

Harris’ comments echoed similar remarks she made last month, when she said she would not take the president’s “word” alone on a vaccine, because Trump has not been a “credible source of information.”
