San Francisco 49ers Sign Kyle Shanahan To Contract Extension Through 2025 Season

It sure looks like the San Francisco 49ers finally have their long-term solution at head coach. Kyle Shanahan is coming off a 2019 season in which he led San Francisco to a shocking appearance in the Super Bowl. That came after he posted a 10-22 record in his first two seasons.

Shanahan, 40, is now being rewarded for it. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the 49ers have signed him to a new six-year contract through the 2025 season. It will make Shanahan one of the five highest-paid coaches in the NFL.

The report notes that negotiations between Shanahan and 49ers CEO Jed York were not drawn out. The two sides realized that this relationship was worth extending. It represents the second six-year contract Shanahan has signed since he was hired by San Francisco ahead of the 2017 season. That’s certainly a rarity in today’s NFL. And it shows us just how happy San Francisco’s brass is with the innovative offensive mind.

This is no small thing for the organization. The 49ers had gone through one-and-done head coaches Jim Tomsula and Chip Kelly following Jim Harbaugh’s ugly departure from the organization back in December of 2014. This almost guarantees that Shanahan will be the 49ers’ longest-tenured head coach since George Seifert, who manned the sideline from 1989-1996.

The son of former 49ers offensive coordinator Mike Shanahan, San Francisco’s current head coach grew up around the organization. Needless to say, this was a match made in heaven from the start.

Destined to be a head coach since starting his career as a graduate assistant for UCLA back in 2003, it was a long road for Shanahan to San Francisco. He spent time as an offensive coordinator for the Houston Texans, Washington Redskins, Cleveland Browns and Atlanta Falcons before earning his first gig as a head coach.

Shanahan is seen as one of the elite play callers in the NFL. Last season saw San Francisco rank No. 4 in total offense and second in the league in scoring. Shanahan himself oversaw a tremendous statistical season from quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.

This deal comes after Shanahan posted a 23-25 record in his first three seasons as the 49ers’ head coach. It also, in most likelihood, means that general manager John Lynch will be extended here soon. The two were hired together ahead of the 2017 season and are tied at the hip.

For San Francisco, this represents a level of continuity the organization has not had since its last Super Bowl win some quarter century ago.
