Slain Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick To Lay In Honor At Capitol On Feb. 2

Topline

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer announced Friday that Brian Sicknick, the Capitol Police officer slain during the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, will lay in honor at the Capitol Rotunda.

Key Facts

In a statement, the Democratic leaders said Sicknick will arrive at the Capitol at 9:30 p.m. EST on Feb. 2, with an overnight viewing period from 10 p.m. to  9 a.m. the following day.

There will also be an invite-only Congressional tribute at 10:30 a.m. before Sicknick is interred at Arlington National Cemetery.

Schumer and Pelosi said Congress is “united in grief, gratitude and solemn appreciation” for Sicknick’s “service and sacrifice,” noting that he “helped save lives, defend the temple of our democracy and ensure that the Congress was not diverted from our duty.”

“May the ceremony and the knowledge that so many mourn with and pray for them be a comfort to Officer Sicknick’s family during this sad time,” they added.

Key Background

Sicknick, 42, joined the Capitol Police in 2008 after six years in the New Jersey Air National Guard. The night after the Jan. 6 attack – in which a mob of Trump supporters stormed the building in an attempt to stop lawmakers from certifying President Joe Biden’s election victory – he succumbed to injuries he sustained “while physically engaging with protesters,” the Capitol Police said. He was reportedly struck by a fire extinguisher and collapsed upon returning to the division office.

Big Number

5. That’s how many people died as a direct result of the attack, including Sicknick. One Trump supporter was shot while attempting to breach the House chamber, while three died of medical emergencies. Another two Capitol Police officers died by suicide in the wake of the attack.

Tangent

Another 140 officers were injured in the attack, according to the Capitol Police officers’ union. Injuries, they said, include cracked ribs, smashed spinal dishes, stabbings and head injuries.

What To Watch For

The FBI is investigating Sicknick’s death and has indicated it intends to bring felony murder charges. Bureau officials said earlier this month they had conducted dozens of interviews as part of the probe.
