Warren Buffett Says Doing Your Job This Way Is What Separates Successful People From Everyone Else

One of those Buffett lessons urges us to reimagine a better future by challenging us to consider whether we have chosen the right job or career. Here’s Buffett:

For many of us toiling up the corporate path and burning the candle at both ends, we take for granted our job security while secretly wishing we were doing something else — something we actually loved.

Doing what you love is a major reason for your long-term happiness. And knowing what you love should be your first step toward self-discovery. After all, if you don’t know what it is you love, the path ahead may be unclear. 

There are several reasons why you should consider doing what you love, including:

1. You become more optimistic.

People who do what they love are more open to opportunities and new experiences; they are willing to accept challenges and take risks, which are predictors of greater earning opportunity.

2. You become your true self.

When you do what you love you start to get more in tune with yourself. You create alignment between your work, values, and the things of which you’re passionate. This opens up a world of new possibilities as you learn, at the core of your being, what it is that you want out of life.

3. You become more motivated.

Loving what you do releases discretionary effort — you become more motivated to succeed by putting in more time to get work done. The difference is that you do it because you want to, not because you’re taking someone else’s marching orders or feel obligated to do it. On the contrary, you have an intrinsic desire to be more productive because you believe in what you do — you know your hard efforts will make a difference in the world and for those whom you serve.
