Top Trump Campaign Staffer Slams GOP Congressman For Calling QAnon A ‘Fabrication’

TOPLINE

Matt Wolking, the Trump campaign’s rapid deputy communications director, slammed Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.) for disparaging QAnon, signaling the Republican establishment’s increasing willingness to accommodate the fringe conspiracy as its adherents have multiplied and even emerged victorious in GOP congressional primaries.

KEY FACTS

“Qanon is a fabrication,” Kinzinger said of the baseless conspiracy theory, which posits that President Trump is working to defeat a network of liberal politicians, bureaucrats and celebrities operating a sex trafficking ring.

He continued, “This ‘insider’ has predicted so much incorrectly (but people don’t remember PAST predictions) so now has switched to vague generalities.  Could be Russian propaganda or a basement dweller.  Regardless, no place in Congress for these conspiracies.”

Wolking shot back at Kinzinger several hours later, tweeting, “When will @RepKinzinger condemn the Steele Dossier fabrications and conspiracy theories pushed by Democrats? That actually WAS Russian propaganda.”

The exchange comes a day after Marjorie Taylor Greene – a vocal QAnon believer condemned by GOP leaders for Facebook videos disparaging Muslims, repeating anti-Semitic conspiracy theories and comparing Black Lives Matter to neo-nazis – won the GOP primary runoff in Georgia’s 14th Congressional district.

Shortly after winning her primary, Greene was welcomed by party leaders, with Trump calling her a “future Republican Star” and  House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) saying in a statement “we look forward” to Greene joining Congress – a likely scenario given that her district gave for Trump more than 75% of the vote in 2016.

Greene is one of more than a dozen QAnon-friendly candidates running for office this year, including Jo Rae Perkins, who won a GOP Senate primary in Oregon, and Lauren Boebert, who unseated Rep. Scott Tipton (R-Colo.) in Colorado’s 3rd district in June.

Chief Critic

The FBI has labelled QAnon a domestic terrorist threat, according to a report from Yahoo News in August 2019. A document from the Bureau’s Phoenix field office reportedly describes “conspiracy theory-driven domestic extremists,” as a growing danger, specifically referencing QAnon.

Crucial Quote

“The FBI assesses these conspiracy theories very likely will emerge, spread, and evolve in the modern information marketplace, occasionally driving both groups and individual extremists to carry out criminal or violent acts,” the document reportedly says.

Big Number

34%. Though QAnon remained fairly obscure to most Americans as of March according to a Pew Research poll, much of the Republican base could be receptive to it if exposed to information about it. A Pew poll in June found that as much as 34% of Republicans believe the baseless conspiracy that the coronavirus pandemic is probably or definitely true.
