Tsunami Advisory Issued For Southern Alaska Coast After 7.5 Magnitude Earthquake

Topline

A tsunami advisory has been issued for the southern coast of Alaska and the Alaskan Peninsula after a 7.5 magnitude earthquake hit the area.

Key Facts

The earthquake was centered 55 miles southeast of Sand Point, Alaska.

The advisory covers most of the Alaskan Peninsula, from the Unimak Pass to the Kennedy Entrance.

Police in Homer, Alaska, originally told residents living in low elevations inside the warning zone to evacuate, but later said those who evacuated could return after the initial warning was downgraded to an advisory.

In Sand Point and King Cove, the observed wave height following the earthquake reached 2.3 feet and 1.8 feet respectively.

The National Weather Services recommends that anyone in the advisory area refrain from going out to shore to observe the tsunami and “move out of the water, off the beach, and away from harbors, marinas, breakwaters, bays and inlets.”

Crucial Quote

“Tsunami advisories mean that a tsunami capable of producing strong currents or waves dangerous to persons in or very near the water is expected or is already occurring.  Areas in the advisory should not expect widespread inundation,” according to the National Weather Service.
