Trump Says He Will ‘Never Concede’ Despite Transition Go-Ahead, Retweets Call For In-Person Revote

Topline

One day after authorizing President-elect Joe Biden to begin a transition, President Trump displayed no intention of conceding and shared a message on Twitter calling for an in-person revote, a sign the mostly out-of-sight president is likely to continue his public campaign to undermine the results of the election.

Key Facts

On Tuesday, Trump retweeted a message from the Columbia Bugle, an anonymous right-wing Twitter account, which read “I concede NOTHING!!!!!”, hours after tweeting he would “never concede to fake ballots & ‘Dominion,’” referring to a debunked conspiracy theory about election voting machines.

Trump also shared a tweet from actor Randy Quaid, an actor who fled to Canada after facing felony charges and was deported back to the U.S., calling for an “in-person-only-paper ballot re-vote.”

“Are you listening Republicans?” Trump said, referring to the tweet (a small but growing number of congressional Republicans have acknowledged Biden’s victory, including seven GOP senators).

There has never been a redo of a presidential election at the state or county level, and legal scholars are skeptical it would even be legal to hold one.

It’s rare, but courts have occasionally ordered an election do-over at the local level following substantial evidence of election fraud or voting malfunctions.

Quaid’s tweet cites “flagrant irregularities” as reason for conducting a revote, though there’s been no substantial evidence of any election malfeasance so far: of the 36 legal cases filed by the Trump campaign challenging election results, 25 have been “denied, dismissed, settled or withdrawn,” according to NBC News

Crucial Quote

When asked by Fox News’ Sean Hannity about the prospect of a do-over in a battleground state on November 5, two days after the election, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.) dismissed the idea, saying the “standard for holding a new election is extraordinarily high.”

Key Background

The General Services Administration, a part of the Trump administration, signed off on Biden’s victory on Tuesday, formally allowing the transition process to begin. In a tweet after the head of the GSA, Emily Murphy, announced the move, Trump claimed he was “recommending that Emily and her team do what needs to be done with regard to initial protocols, and have told my team to do the same.” He followed up Tuesday morning saying “the GSA does not determine who the next President of the United States will be.”
