Trump Says It Would Be An ‘Insult’ For Kamala Harris To Be First Female President

TOPLINE

President Trump launched an all-out assault on his Democratic opponents at a packed rally in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, with particular vitriol directed at vice presidential nominee Kamala Harris, who he has frequently disparaged with attacks that have been decried as sexist by critics.

KEY FACTS

Trump questioned Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden’s physical and mental health, a common refrain, calling the former vice president “half competent and heading south rapidly.”

Trump also sought to frame Biden as a sinister operator, saying the “only way” Biden could win is if he does “very bad things,” and encouraging supporters to “go be poll watchers” to “watch all the thieving and stealing and robbing they do.”

Trump also took aim at Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah.) for voting to convict him for abuse of power during the Senate’s impeachment trial in February, sarcastically calling him “a beauty” and claiming he’s “not a very popular guy in Utah” and “couldn’t get elected dog catcher in Utah.”

But Trump reserved his most brutal attacks for his female adversaries, such as his 2016 rival Hillary Clinton, whom he compared to Biden as “meaner” and “not as nice,” but also “smarter than he is.”

Referring to Harris, Trump claimed “nobody likes her,” citing her poor performance in the 2020 Democratic presidential primaries despite expectations that she would be a strong candidate, a frequent line of attack for him.

Trump also once again mused about a potential Harris presidency, asserting that she could “never be the first woman president,” adding that it would be an “insult to our country.”

Crucial Quote

“Do you remember last time? They said ‘women don’t like Trump,’ I said ‘I think they do,’” Trump said, claiming to have done “really well with women” in 2016. New York Times exit polls in 2016 had him trailing Clinton with women by 12 points.

Big Number

19 percentage points. That’s how much Biden leads with female voters in a Economist/YouGov poll released earlier this month, with 55% support to Trump’s 36%.

Chief Critic

Andrew Bates, the Biden campaign’s rapid response director, shot back at Trump’s comments about Harris by noting that he said she would be a “fine choice” as Biden’s running mate in July.
