Two Trump Staffers Who Attended Tulsa Rally Test Positive For Coronavirus

Two staffers who attended President Trump’s rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on Saturday have tested positive for Covid-19, according to a Monday statement from the Trump campaign, bringing the total of coronavirus-infected team members involved in the rally up to eight.

KEY FACTS

Trump campaign communication director Tim Murtaugh told CNBC that after another round of testing for campaign staff in Tulsa, two additional members of the advance team tested positive for coronavirus.

“These staff members attended the rally but were wearing masks during the entire event,” said Murtaugh, adding that the campaign has activated quarantine and contact tracing protocols.

Before the event, which took place on Saturday despite concerns over a coronavirus spike in the area, six other members of the advance team tested positive for the virus—and subsequently did not attend the rally.

Event attendees were required to sign a waiver releasing the Trump campaign of any liability if they were to be infected during the indoor rally, a type of event the U.S. Centers for Disease Control guidelines classify as “highest risk.”

Trump has come under fire in recent days for saying at the rally that he told his team to slow down coronavirus testing, which he described as “a double-edged sword,” a statement that White House spokesperson Kayleigh McEnany has since said was a joke

Key Background

Ahead of the rally, Tulsa officials warned that Trump’s first campaign event in three months would likely worsen a recent spike in Oklahoma infections. Many requested that Trump cancel the event, which Trump officials said over a million had registered to attend, or at least move it outdoors. Following record-breaking daily new infection numbers in Tulsa County leading up to the rally, executive director of the Tulsa Health Department described the rally as “the perfect storm of potential over-the-top disease transmission.”

Key Number

Despite Trump’s emphasis on a high expected turnout at the rally, many of the BOK Center’s seats remained empty on Saturday. Attendance was just 6,200, a fraction of the venue’s 19,200 capacity.
