U.S. Supreme Court Will Hear Case Over Mueller Grand Jury Docs

TOPLINE

The U.S. Supreme Court announced Thursday that it will hear arguments next term in a case determining whether the House Judiciary Committee can view sealed grand jury documents from Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russia and the 2016 election, delivering a win to the Trump administration by ensuring that House Democrats won’t be able to see the documents before the November election.

KEY FACTS

The court will review a lower court order that granted the House Judiciary Committee access to sealed grand jury documents from the Mueller report, which House Democrats had initially sought as part of their impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump.

The Supreme Court had previously put the lower court’s decision on hold in May, meaning that House Democrats have still not yet had access to the redacted information.

Had the court rejected the case and the lower court order remained in place, the House Judiciary Committee could have made the information public, as the committee can release information it receives with a majority vote.

The court will now hear the case as part of its upcoming term that begins in October, pushing the question of whether the documents can be viewed until after the November election, and potentially after Trump leaves office.
