Former UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos fought again for that title in May 2017. That contest lasted 2:22. Stipe Miocic, who was making his second defense of the heavyweight crown, stopped dos Santos via punches. Dos Santos won his next fight, He defeated Blagoy Ivanov by decision in the contest. In his next outing, dos Santos met Tai Tuivasa in the main event of UFC Fight Night 142.

Tuivasa entered that contest with an unbeaten 10-0 record. Despite his perfect career, Tuivasa, who was ranked No. 11 in the official UFC heavyweight rankings, was a +130 underdog. Dos Santos, who was the No. 7 ranked heavyweight was a -160 favorite.

It was obvious from the start of the contest that dos Santos had the better boxing ability. He was crisper, more focused, faster and more accurate. However, Tuivasa, was fearless in throwing heavy and hard punches and kicks.

Dos Santos used his effective striking and defense to avoid an overhand from Tuivasa with less than two minutes ticked off the clock in the second round. Dos Santos’ counter dropped Tuivasa to the mat where the former champ unloaded a litany of ground strikes to bring the fight to an end.

Dos Santos is 1-2 since that win. He is in the midst of the first two-fight losing skid of his MMA career.
