UFC Fight Night 172 Results: Winners, Bonuses, And Highlights

Alistair Overeem scored a workman-like second-round TKO victory over Walt Harris in Saturday night’s main event at the fan-less VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Florida.

Overeem was in trouble in the first round after eating a hard combination, but Harris slipped and it gave his opponent an opportunity to take top position. Overeem used the position to pound Overeem for more than half the round.

Coming into the second frame, Harris was exhausted. Overeem took advantage. He landed a head kick that dropped Harris and Overeem lowered the boom until referee Dan Miragliotta called an end to the fight.

Across the nation, fans were in Harris’ corner coming into this fight as he returned to the Octagon for the first time since his daughter’s murder in 2019. Unfortunately, he didn’t get the win on Saturday.

However, the congratulations and salutes came in from all over after the fight was over as people marvelled at his courage and effort.

Claudia Gadelha Edges Angela Hill

In a great fight that was tough to score, Claudia Gadelha eeked out a split-decision victory over Angela Hill in the co-main event. As you can tell by Hill’s reaction to Bruce Buffer’s announcement, she was not happy with the decision.

Gadelha controlled the first round with a takedown and some ground-and-pound strikes. In the second, Hill took command. Her striking proved to be superior as she caught Gadelha and dropped her with a clean punch.

In the third round, Gadelha obliged Hill by keeping the fight on the feet. Both women had their moments, but two of the judges liked Gadelha’s work a little more, and she got the decision victory.

Hill was upset with the decision as it snapped a win streak. However, it was a respectable defeat against one of the best fighters in the women’s strawweight division.

Here is a look at all of the results.

Top Finishes and Takeaways

Rodrigo Nascimento Shines in His Main Roster Debut

In his main roster debut, the undefeated Rodrigo Nascimento Ferreira delivered a strong overall performance. While he came in most known for his submission skills, Ferreira showed off his striking against Don’Tale Mayes before ultimately winning via rear-naked choke in the second round.

Nascimento needs some tougher competition, but he has the kind of frame and skills that could make him an interesting player in the UFC’s heavyweight division.

Cortney Casey Says No Judges Needed

Most of Cortney Casey’s fights have gone the distance, and she has too often come up on the short end of the stick in close bouts.

On Saturday night, Casey leaned heavily on her Jiu Jitsu. Working from the bottom, Casey locked in an armbar to force the submission win over Mara Romero Borella.

This was Casey’s debut in the flyweight division. She looked strong and said during the post-fight interview she would remain in the weight class for a while. It just might be the best spot for her. Casey earned a $50,000 Performance of the Night bonus.

Kevin Holland Destroys Anthony Hernandez in 39 Seconds

In his best performance in the UFC, Kevin Holland needed just 39 seconds to get rid of Anthony Hernandez. An elbow to the head set up a left knee to the liver.

Hernandez went down and Holland finished it with punches to his incapacitated opponent to draw the stoppage.

Holland has a lot of talent. Perhaps this will be the beginning of a strong run. He called out Mickey Gall at welterweight after the fight.

Miguel Baeza Blazes Matt Brown

After a rocky first round, undefeated up-and-comer Miguel Baeza showed just how good he can be with a second-round KO win over Matt Brown.

A counter left hand sent Brown down and a follow-up punch was enough for referee Jason Herzog to call an end to the fight.

Baeza improved to 9-0 with seven wins by TKO with the triumph over the legendary Brown. Baeza earned the other POTN bonus for his finish.

Kevin Randleman Gets the Hall Call

During Saturday’s broadcast, the UFC announced that former heavyweight champion Kevin Randleman will be posthumously inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame class for 2020 as a Pioneer.

Randleman was one of the most exciting and fearsome competitors in the early UFC days and he also made his name with the PRIDE promotion. Prior to that, he was a wrestling All-American and champion at Ohio State. This was absolutely a worthy induction.

The next UFC show is scheduled for June 6, and it’s the UFC 250 pay-per-view. UFC Women’s Featherweight and Bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes will defend the former title against Felicia Spencer in the main event.
