WWE May Be Planning A Huge WrestleMania Rematch

WWE is planting the seeds for a WrestleMania 36 dream match that would take place under much different circumstances this time around.

At last Sunday’s Money in the Bank pay-per-view, WWE dropped some not-so-subtle hints that AJ Styles still had The Undertaker on his mind, and “The Phenomenal One” also appeared to be disgusted with WWE’s promotion of the WWE Network documentary Undertaker: The Last Ride on Monday Night Raw the following night, an obvious indicator that there is at least a chance we will see the two superstars have a traditional match in the near future:

Of course, Taker and Styles battled in what was the most memorable bout at WrestleMania, the first-ever Boneyard Match that received rave reviews, became the talk of social media and made night one of the very unique WrestleMania 36 a rousing success. In fact, WWE.com wrote the following about the impact of the critically acclaimed Boneyard match on WrestleMania 36, which became “the most social event in WWE history” with a staggering 13.8 million social media interactions: “This year’s WrestleMania is officially the most social event in WWE history as new champions, a jaw-dropping Boneyard Match, a mind-bending Firefly Fun House Match and non-stop action ignited the conversation throughout.”

WrestleMania’s two cinematic-style matches—and in particular the Boneyard match— left fans wanting more of these types of bouts, but also more from the feud between The Undertaker and Styles. “The Deadman” reportedly requested to work with Styles at WrestleMania 36 because he viewed Styles as a modern-day Shawn Michaels, which is about the biggest compliment an in-ring performer can get. Due to the circumstances created by the COVID-19 pandemic, however, WWE chose to break up the monotony of having a jam-packed WrestleMania card featuring nothing but audience-less matches by thinking outside-the-box and creating intriguing new match concepts for John Cena vs. Bray Wyatt as well as Styles vs. The Undertaker.

As entertaining as the match—if you can call it that—between Styles and Taker was and even though the bout did a masterful job of masking Taker’s limitations in the ring, it left many salivating for a legitimate match between the two future Hall of Famers, including Styles himself. On the most recent episode of WWE’s The Bump (h/t Wrestling Inc), Styles indicated that he would love to go at it with Taker one more time, saying, “If there’s ever a chance for me to get my hands on The Undertaker again, I would gladly take him out, no problem. Obviously, it is a problem, but I’m looking forward to it.”

There has been no definitive word as to whether or not WWE will ultimately choose to go that route, but as noted, there are many indications that WWE is at least considering the possibly of The Undertaker vs. Styles II.

According to Cageside Seats, “Bryan Alvarez & Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Radio both think WWE is working toward a more traditional AJ Styles/Undertaker match,” while Meltzer said that he believes the two top stars will have a match “way down the line.” Given recent comments made by Styles as well as the teases made by WWE at both Money in the Bank and on Raw, it appears WWE is hopeful that it will be able to present a traditional bout between the two stars at some point down the road just as it’s doing with Edge and Randy Orton at Money in the Bank, where the former tag team partners will likely battle in a standard wrestling match.

Because WWE’s programming has been thrown into disarray by COVID-19, continuing major rivalries may be the running theme moving forward, and Taker vs. Styles is one dream feud that sure feels like it will continue.
