WWE WrestleMania 36 Night 2 Results: Drew McIntyre Defeats Brock Lesnar In Bittersweet Coronation

Drew McIntyre defeated Brock Lesnar for the WWE Championship after delivering four Claymore Kicks in a very hard-hitting main event. Despite the feel-good victory, WrestleMania signed off on a solemn note with McIntyre celebrating in an empty Performance Center. Amid public gathering bans due to the cause of the coronavirus pandemic, McIntyre had to celebrate his biggest win by himself.

Drew McIntyre represented a bright spot for WWE in a time where the entire product is snakebitten. McIntyre was one of the last remaining credible threats to Brock Lesnar after failed efforts from the likes of Samoa Joe and Braun Strowman. To this point, and unlike Joe and Strowman before him, WWE has managed to do everything right with McIntyre.

McIntyre caught fire almost out of nowhere after only the slightest of tweaks to his promising-but-wooden Scottish Psychopath character. His Royal Rumble win, with the elimination of Lesnar as a cherry on top, all but turned the once-failed prospect into a made man.

McIntyre’s would-be coronation, however, has since been soured as WWE’s biggest show moved to the WWE Performance Center amid the rapidly changing COVID-19 pandemic.

McIntyre and Lesnar will forever have the distinction as the first—and hopefully only—empty-arena world championship match at WrestleMania.

In McIntyre, WWE had the rare combination of right place, right time, right guy with its fickle fanbase on his side. Timing came back around to bite McIntyre as, much like Braun Strowman on SmackDown, he’ll look to hold WWE together as a top star on Raw during the most uncertain of times.
