Euro 2020: A look ahead to some of the most exciting group stage matches

After being delayed by a year due to the global coronavirus pandemic, the much-anticipated European Championships are now just around the corner. Football fans all around the continent will be glued to their television sets throughout June and July, and for good reason, as it’s set to be a thrilling month of international football.

Some would argue that major competitions don’t really get exciting until the knockout stages but let us be the first to tell you that that’s not the case with the upcoming Euros. In fact, there’s plenty of thrilling group stage matches to add you to your calendar. So, why not read on as we take a look at some of the standout group fixtures now?

France vs Germany – June 15th

France vs Germany at the Fußball Arena München is undoubtedly the tie too look forward to in the opening round of group stage matches. With defending champions Portugal also in their group, there’s a lot at stake in this game and both sides will be hoping to start the competition on the right foot. An Antoine Griezmann double secured a 2-1 victory for France when the sides last met in the Nations League back in 2018.

England vs Scotland – June 18th

All eyes will be on Wembley Stadium for this clash between two old foes in the second round of group stage matches on June 18th. There’s no doubt that Gareth Southgate’s side, who will also face Croatia and the Czech Republic in Group D, will be the heavy favourites in the England vs Scotland odds, but we’re sure the Scots won’t go down without bringing a fight to the capital. There was plenty of drama last time these two nations met in 2017 as Celtic’s Leigh Griffiths fired Scotland into the lead with a quick-fire double late on at Hampden Park. However, an injury-time goal from Harry Kane salvaged a 2-2 draw in the World Cup qualifier.

Portugal vs Germany – June 19th

The following afternoon, there is another unmissable game as Portugal take on Germany in Munich. It will be the first time the sides have met since the World Cup in 2014, where the Germans thrashed Portugal 4-0 in the groups as Pepe saw red. That marked a fourth straight victory for Germany over Portugal and given that the latter have beaten the hosts just once in their own backyard, they will have their work cut out if they want to pick up all three points in Munich.

Portugal vs France – June 23rd

With both sides having already faced Hungary and Germany, a clash at the Puskás Aréna in Budapest could define who progresses to the round of 16 and who heads home with their tails tucked firmly between their legs. This is, of course, a repeat of the 2016 final, where Eder scored the only goal of the game in extra time to give Portugal a shock victory over hosts France in Paris. They have met twice since in the Nations League, drawing 0-0 before N’Golo Kanté’s effort secured France a victory at the Estádio da Luz in Lisbon.
