On Janmashtami, while indulging in festive sweets and fasting, one should keep in mind that overindulgence can lead to unexpected health issues. Dr Rahul Chaura’s advice might be the key to a safe celebration

Most of us observe day-long fast on Janmashtami, the birth anniversary of Lord Krishna. Many prepare and eat at lot of sweet dishes including varieties of Paag throughout the day. You will hardly find a house where Mewa Paag, Giri Paag and Dhaniya Panjiri are not prepared. One may endlessly eat nuts and celebrate the day, if they keep in mind these five things suggested by this doctor.

Dr Rahul Chaura, Endocrinologist at Yashoda Super Speciality Hospital at Kaushambi, said that after fasting and taking part in festivities throughout the day, people often end up at hospitals with health problems. Hence, it is better to take precautions beforehand.

1. Choose The Right Dessert

While the essence of Janmashtami is incomplete without sweets, eating a lot of it may be harmful. Sweets may not only cause an imbalance in blood sugar levels, it can also lead to other health problems. Dr Rahul Chaura says that it is better to eat milk-based sweets during the festival than those made of ghee. This is because sweets made of milk have lower glycemic index and they cause less harm to our body.

2. Avoid Fried Food While Fasting

Consumption of fried things like puri, pakwans, fritters after fasting should be avoided at all costs after fasting as it increases the risk of obesity and cardiovascular problems. Dr Chaura said that fried food not only increases calories but can also cause dehydration and stomach problems like constipation.

3. Limit The Amount of Food You Eat

Amid the festivities, we often end up eating excessively. We even eat something or the other even during fasting. At times, we eat too much in the evening after starving for hours in the morning. This can cause stomach problems. Hence, one needs to control the quantity of food they are eating.

4. Maintain a Balanced Diet

Whether fasting or otherwise, one should not forget to include all the nutrients in their diet. We must make sure to include foods like fruits, vegetables, protein and milk in our diet.

5. Stay Hydrated

We must not forget to drink water while immersing ourselves in festivities throughout the day. Drinking enough water keeps our body hydrated and we can enjoy ourselves on Janmashtami without any hassle.
