Jane Fonda And Marisa Tomei Join Call For Biden To Nominate Rep. Deb Haaland As Interior Secretary

Topline

A group of 100 Native American women and allies, including actresses and activists Jane Fonda and Marisa Tomei, wrote a letter to President-elect Joe Biden on Thursday to urge him to nominate Rep. Deb Haaland (D-N.M.) as Secretary of the Department of the Interior, noting she would be the first Native American cabinet member.

Key Facts

The effort was organized by Tomei and Mark Ruffalo’s political advocacy organization We Stand United and the Native American advocacy group Protect the Sacred, according to Variety.

Cher, Mandy Moore, Julianne Moore, Alyssa Milano, America Ferrera, Rosario Dawson, Amy Schumer, Zoe Saldana, Catherine Keener, Sarah Silverman and Kerry Washington were among the celebrity signees, all of whom have used their platform to speak up about the climate crisis in the past.

Haaland would lead the agency responsible for conserving natural resources and cultural heritage and managing the federal government’s relationship with the 566 federally recognized Native American Indian tribes and Alaska Native entities.

It is a critical time to have a Native American cabinet member to “shift the focus back to caring for future generations and returning to a value system that honors Mother Earth,” the signees wrote.

Haaland would work to preserve natural resources, honor the treaties between the federal government and tribal nations and would “return to the practice of science-based decision-making,” they wrote.

Key Background

The signees noted that, as a member of Congress since 2019, Haaland has passed four bills into law with bipartisan support including the “Not Invisible Act” and the “Justice for Native Survivors of Sexual Violence Act,” which addressed missing and murdered Indigenous women and helped secure $8 billion in coronavirus relief aid for tribal nations. Haaland is vice-chair of the House Natural Resources Committee and chairs the National Parks, Forest and Public Lands and the House Armed Services committees. Haaland made history this year when New Mexico became the first state to elect all women of color to Congress
