The UEFA Euro 2020 Tournament

With the top divisions completed across Europe and the small matter of the Champions League won by Chelsea, we turn our attention to the European Championships 2020. 2020 because it is a year delayed, so the anticipation and frustration at having to wait to see the best footballers around the continent compete in one place has been building for far too long.

The favourites have to be France or Belgium with their star-filled squads, we will get onto the players to watch out for later in the article but which team should you be cheering on or trying to pick out of the hat at your work sweepstakes?

The quality of the teams is really very high because there are no whipping boys like there is with the World Cup, only the 2 top teams from each qualifier group progressed to this showpiece. With perhaps the exception of North Macedonia and Wales, all the teams can make an impact at the tournament of Europe’s elite national teams. Here are some of the group matches that will be good to watch.

Some of the Betting Odds for the Euros.

The reigning world champions, Les Blues, have forged ahead in the betting to become joint favourites with England. At 5 to 1 they have a good chance because they boast one of the longest serving managers in Didier Deschamps so a stability and well-tested tournament setup. Germany can never be written off, but their manager, Joachim Löw is a dead man walking and in contrast does not have the trust of his players or nation and is set to leave his position after the tournament whatever the result. The Mannshaft odds are as long as 7 to 1.

England boast a squad full of stars, with a staggering 37 goals in the eight qualifier games, they were the top scorers, but they always, always flatter to deceive at big tournaments. Even as the bookies’ favourites at 5 to 1, there is more chance of Scotland winning a game at the tournament, there are some interesting specials including free bets with various bookmakers.

888 are giving £30 of free bets for an initial bet of £10 plus £10 to use on their casino section. Net Bet are offering enhanced odds on 2 dark horses for the tournament in Turkey at 50 to 1 and Italy at 30 to 1.

Belgium is the other star-studded team with high hopes of winning this tournament with their so-called golden generation. They are on at 6 to 1 to fulfil their potential. Despite them being ranked world number 1, it’s probably because their manager Roberto Martínez is not an elite manager that can guide such a talented team to the trophy.

Individual Players to Watch out for.

Having a closer look at Belgium’s team, they have some of the top-performing players in the Italian Serie A, Spanish La Liga and English Premiership. Romelu Lukaku has been firing in the goals for Inter Milan helping usurp Juventus from the summit of Serie A. Kevin De Bruyne is the best midfielder in England if not the world right now and Eden Hazard has so much attacking flair despite his injury ravaged stint in Real Madrid. Their defense is made up of stalwarts including Jason Denayer, Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen.

England have Jack Grealish, probably the finest midfield player England have produced for 10 years, but his starting place is not even assured. They will rely on Harry Kane to lead the line who could be a good bet for Golden Boot. Then there are the undeniable talents of Phil Foden, a star this season in the Premiership.

However, look out for the likes of Kylan Mbappe, N’golo Kante and Antoine Griezmann to have goals and man of the match performances if France are to progress deep into the tournament.

Germany’s Timo Werner, Leroy Sané, Kai Havertz are also explosive players that can put any team to the sword on their day.
